The Department of Public Safety works to ensure students, employees and visitors have a safe and secure environment on campus. On duty every day, around the clock, public safety officers provide physical security, investigative services, safety education, first aid and other assistance. They patrol campus buildings and facilities on foot and in vehicles, and respond to medical calls, public safety situations and all emergencies on campus. In addition, the department collaborates with local law enforcement agencies to effectively respond to emergency situations that impact safety.
A safe college community requires the collective efforts of students, employees, and visitors. We must all take responsibility for our own personal safety as well as remaining alert, and security conscious in general. Students must abide by the Code for Student Rights, Responsibilities and Conduct, and along with faculty and staff, we must follow all college policies, regulations, and procedures.

Protecting Yourself
While Walking
- Avoid walking alone in dark areas at night or in isolated areas any time of the day.
- If you cannot find someone to walk with you, contact the Department of Public Safety at 443-518-5555 or pick up one of our red emergency phones.
- If you have to walk alone, walk confidently and with purpose. Walk on well-lit walkways and plan your route ahead of time. Avoid spaces between parked cars, overgrown shrubs, dark passageways, and areas where someone could corner you. Remember that it is best to walk facing traffic.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- If someone follows you, is persistent, or becomes obscene, contact the Department of Public Safety at 443-518-5555 or pick up one of our red emergency phones. If the person is in a car, write down the license number and report it to the Department of Public Safety as soon as possible.

Preventing Thefts
From Vehicles
- Try to park in well-lit areas. Remember, it may be dark when you return.
- If you are trapped in your car, honk your horn in quick short bursts. This will attract people's attention.
- When returning to your car, have your keys in hand to avoid unnecessary delays in entering your vehicle.
- As you approach your car, look underneath and check that the door locks are the same way you left them.
- Do not pick up hitchhikers.
- Buckle your seat belt, and don't drink and drive.
From Offices
- Close and lock your office when you are away.
- Lock your desk and file cabinets.
- Don't leave your purse in the bottom drawer of your desk.
- Never leave your purse or valuables unattended.
